Susan's mother, Elizabeth, was five months pregnant when she contracted polio in the 1950s.
Susan Mennell, now 70, was born while her mother Elizabeth lay paralysed inside an iron lung after catching polio five months into her pregnancy.
Elizabeth spent three years in hospital, was permanently disabled, never walked again, and was unable to hold her children after returning home.
Susan was overall a healthy baby, though she did not speak until around age three, raising early concerns about her vocal cords.
