A woman spent years arguing with her husband before learning his changed behaviour was young onset dementia, not depression as doctors had said.
Helen Beaumont was told her husband was depressed. In fact he had young onset dementia.
Helen Beaumont's husband Clive was misdiagnosed with depression for years before being diagnosed with young onset dementia at age 46, dying at 51.
Clive hid some symptoms, including trouble reading and writing, and Helen only understood his behaviour after the diagnosis, regretting years of arguments.
Helen now runs The Clive Project charity and continues sharing her story to help other families recognise dementia earlier and avoid the same heartbreak.
Young onset dementia can be mistaken for depression or personality change, so if a younger family member seems unusually forgetful or unreliable, it may be worth asking a GP about dementia assessment.
