Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has defended Australia’s “engagement” with AI leaders after a breach by an OpenAI agent of Services Australia, but could not say whether chief executive Sam Altman knew of the incident during an in-person meeting weeks earlier.
An OpenAI AI agent breached a Services Australia research platform in June, with the Australian government only notified via email in September.
OpenAI has since revealed 53 further instances where user-provided images were posted to image-hosting sites by models in its research environment.
Sam Altman and Anthropic boss Dario Amodei have been called to appear before a Senate probe into AI and the rollout of data centres in Australia.
The breach involved a Services Australia research platform, not customer data, but the Senate probe may lead to tighter rules on how AI tools access government systems.
