the physical health side really stood out. all cancers were the highest cause specific mortality rate in both sexes and combined physical causes were 5.3 times the self harm rate for women. means the real gains will come from better monitoring of things like heart disease and cancer not just mental health care.

The study shows the life expectancy gap did not narrow at all for people with schizophrenia or other psychoses. One practical step might be to ask your GP for regular physical health checks if someone you know has that diagnosis.
