Aryna Sabalenka was knocked out of the China Open in Beijing by 20-year-old Czech Nikola Bartunkova, 6-4 6-3, in the opening week.
World No 1 Elena Rybakina had already exited the day before, leaving the WTA 1000 event without its two top seeds very early.
Meanwhile in Tokyo, Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the semi-finals after opponent Denis Shapovalov retired with a hip injury while trailing.
