Type of Menopause Hormone Therapy Tied to Small Autoimmune Disease Risk
A new study suggests estrogen-only menopause hormone therapy is linked to a slightly higher risk of some autoimmune diseases compared to combined estrogen-progestogen therapy.
Estrogen-only therapy singled out in retrospective study
A retrospective study of over 100,000 women found estrogen-only hormone therapy was associated with a slightly higher rate of autoimmune disease than combined therapy.
The study found significantly increased hazards for five conditions including multiple sclerosis, lupus and psoriasis, though the absolute differences were small.
The lead researcher said the findings should encourage individualised care discussions with doctors, and a Harvard expert noted the results need replication in larger trials.
Researchers say the findings should prompt informed conversations with your doctor rather than any immediate change to your hormone therapy, as the absolute risk differences were small.
