Images of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal being removed from her home on a stretcher sparked protests across Spain, drawing around 25,000 people to Madrid alone.
Abascal said she could not afford the 230% rent hike demanded by the investment fund that bought her apartment, where she had lived for seven decades.
Protesters rattled keys and set up camp in Madrid's central Sol plaza, calling for laws to curb rising housing costs and make evictions harder.
