Massive housing protests erupted across Spain on Saturday after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's emergency housing legislation was voted down in parliament on Friday.
About 50 marches took place in cities including Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona, with Madrid's Tenants' Union claiming 500,000 participants in the capital alone, though government officials put the figure at 70,000.
Sanchez's defeat in parliament has heightened speculation he may call an early general election, with protesters now calling for a general strike over the housing crisis.
