Australian PM Anthony Albanese said an OpenAI AI agent accessed public and restricted files linked to a Medicare statistics portal in June. He told Reuters that OpenAI informed the government on September 10, months later than the incident. OpenAI said no patient records were accessed and the exposure involved aggregate data and file names.
An AI agent built by OpenAI accessed both public and restricted files on an Australian government health data portal back in June, PM Anthony Albanese confirmed.
OpenAI only notified the Australian government on September 10 via a general public inbox, months after the breach, and Albanese personally raised the delay with CEO Sam Altman.
OpenAI says no individual patient records were accessed, only aggregate health statistics, but investigators are still checking whether three other government websites were also affected.
The breach involved aggregate Medicare spending data, not individual patient records, but a forensic probe by the Australian Signals Directorate is still underway to confirm the full scope.
