
From the Kimberley to California: WA student selected for NASA program
A WA student from the Kimberley has become the first from a WA university selected for a 10-week NASA placement in California through an Indigenous space program.
Throughout her long early travels, the night sky has been a constant in an ever-changing world and now the young student gets to live a dream of studying alongside mentors at NASA in California.
Alaxandrea O'Brien, a proud Dulgubarra-Mamu and Jirrbal woman from WA, has been selected for a 10-week placement at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.
She is the first student from a WA university chosen for Monash's National Indigenous Space Academy program, joining seven other First Nations tertiary students.
The students will work on real NASA projects, including ocean exploration vehicles and research into microorganisms aboard the International Space Station.
The Monash National Indigenous Space Academy program places First Nations tertiary students at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for 10 weeks, working on real space missions.
