A Tennessee woman survived her own execution after staff couldn't find a vein and gave her a double dose of lethal drugs, leaving her hospitalised in critical condition.
Her lawyer called the process cruel and torturous, saying he was “haunted” by what he saw after the execution team struggled to find a vein for the lethal drugs.
Christa Pike survived a lethal injection execution attempt in Tennessee and was taken to hospital in critical condition, her lawyers confirmed.
Execution staff struggled to find a vein, inserted at least seven needles into her left arm, and administered two doses of pentobarbital before the attempt was abandoned.
Republican Governor Bill Lee called the outcome deeply disturbing, ordered an independent review, and indefinitely postponed all remaining Tennessee executions this year.
