Brazil held the first round of its 2026 presidential election, pitting 80-year-old incumbent Lula against 45-year-old Flávio Bolsonaro.
Flávio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year prison sentence for masterminding a failed coup after losing the 2022 election, but has endorsed his son.
If no candidate wins more than 50 per cent of votes, a runoff will be held three weeks later, with the winner taking power on 5 January 2027.
