The British Columbia government is suing OpenAI in California, alleging ChatGPT failed to alert police to threats made by the Tumbler Ridge mass shooter before he killed eight people.
B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma said the province is suing OpenAI for its failure to notify law enforcement of threats made on its platform, ChatGPT, before the mass shooting.
British Columbia's attorney general announced the provincial government is suing OpenAI over its alleged role in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting in February, which killed six children and two adults.
The province alleges the conversation between the 18-year-old shooter and ChatGPT was alarming enough to trigger an internal OpenAI review, but was never reported to the RCMP.
OpenAI has refused to disclose the chats, and the province is also suing the company for designing an unsafe product, with victims' families filing separate civil claims in California.
