Yemeni government launches offensive to seize all areas from Iran-backed Houthis
Yemen's government has launched a major offensive to retake territory from the Iran-backed Houthis, who simultaneously claimed missile strikes on Saudi Arabia.
Despite the preparations for a counteroffensive, the Houthis have maintained the initiative on the ground, weeks after seizing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in a lightning offensive that saw government forces collapse.
Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council announced a military offensive to drive the Houthis out of the country, with Saudi Arabia leading aerial support.
The Houthis responded by claiming ballistic missile and drone strikes on Saudi Aramco sites in Riyadh, saying it was retaliation for 50 Saudi-led strikes in 12 hours.
The US is providing intelligence support to Saudi operations, drawing Washington deeper into a conflict that has already depleted key military hardware.
