The secret to slower aging may be hiding in your gut
A new study found that gut bacteria are linked to how fast your body ages, with certain microbes associated with slower biological ageing and others with faster ageing.
The secret to aging more slowly may be hiding in your gut. Scientists discovered that certain gut bacteria are strongly linked to how quickly the body ages, with microbial differences accounting for about 15% of the variation in biological aging rates. Some bacterial species were associated with slower aging, while others were linked to accelerated aging.
Scientists found that differences in gut bacterial communities account for about 15 per cent of the variation in how quickly people biologically age, the study published in Scientific Reports found.
The bacterium Bifidobacterium adolescentis was strongly linked to slower biological ageing, while Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens was associated with faster ageing, based on samples from 123 adults.
Researchers say the gut microbiome may be a modifiable system, opening new directions for understanding how lifestyle choices could influence long-term health and longevity.
