Dinosaur skeleton goes to auction in New York with £4.5m price tag
A rare dinosaur skeleton nicknamed Jodi, confirmed last year as a distinct species from T. rex, is going under the hammer at Sotheby's New York for up to $9 million.
The auction of the rare skeleton comes amid debate in the scientific community about whether dinosaur remains should end up in private hands or public view.
A Nanotyrannus skeleton nicknamed Jodi is being auctioned by Sotheby's in New York with an expected price of up to $9 million.
Jodi is one of only three Nanotyrannus skeletons known to science and was confirmed as a distinct genus from T. rex just last October by US researchers.
Scientists are concerned that rare fossils sold privately become inaccessible for research, as few museums can afford prices at this level.
Palaeontologists say privately sold fossils are harder to study, so experts are calling for remains like this to end up in public institutions where they can be freely examined.
