A new report finds Australian Sikhs contribute $15.4 billion a year to the economy — more than one per cent of GDP — despite many working below their skill level.
'Australian Sikhs are more than just Uber and truck drivers', says Amardeep Singh Gill, Chair of the Young Sikh Professional Network (YSPN). YSPN's 2023 Economic Impact Report found that while Sikhs make up around 0.8 per cent of Australia's population, they contribute more than one per cent of the national economy, generating an estimated $15.4 billion annually. Speaking with SBS Punjabi, Gill said this contribution comes despite many migrants working below their skill level because of skills and employment mismatches.
