Japan's JAXA agency launched its MMX spacecraft on a mission to collect the first-ever samples from Phobos, a moon of Mars.
The probe will spend about three years near Mars, landing on Phobos to collect at least 10 grams of surface material before returning to Earth.
Scientists hope the samples will reveal how Mars and its moons formed, and help lay the groundwork for future crewed missions to Mars.
The mission aims to collect at least 10 grams of material from Phobos and return it to Earth, with arrival near Mars expected around August next year.
