A major Swedish study found urban residents with greenery close to their home had a significantly lower risk of developing dementia over time.
The study followed nearly 3,000 older adults for 16 years and found a 20% lower dementia risk for those with greenspace within 100 metres of home, with the link stronger for women.
The researchers say the findings support preserving and adding greenspace in cities, as even small gardens, street trees and courtyards appear to support brain health.
The study found the benefit was strongest for greenery within 100 metres of your front door, so even a garden, street trees or a green courtyard counts.
