A new genetic testing approach for sick children with immune conditions could slash diagnosis waiting times from 12 months to as little as two weeks, University of Queensland research has found.
University of Queensland researchers, working with Children's Health Queensland, developed a faster genetic testing model for children with rare immune conditions.
The new model introduced in-house pathology tests and streamlined specialist access, cutting diagnosis waits from up to 12 months to as little as two weeks.
Earlier diagnosis means children can start targeted treatments sooner, reducing organ damage and giving them a better chance of attending school and living normally, doctors say.
Under the new model, treatment plans changed in 90% of cases once a diagnosis was made, so earlier testing can mean faster, more targeted care for children with immune conditions.
