FlyDubai co-pilot who used crash axe in ‘terror incident’ studied at British university
The FlyDubai co-pilot who attacked the captain with an axe mid-flight studied at a UK university, and investigators are probing whether he acted alone or had extremist backing.
Hammam al-Hammami, believed to be the perpetrator of the FlyDubai hijacking, was educated in the UK
FlyDubai co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami seized an emergency axe two hours into a Dubai to Tel Aviv flight and repeatedly attacked the captain, sending the plane into a 17,000-foot plunge.
Al-Hammami, 29, had reportedly been banned from flying by Omani authorities last year due to radical views, and allegedly told investigators he intended to crash the plane in Israel.
Israeli and Emirati investigators are jointly probing whether al-Hammami acted as a lone wolf or was directed by an external extremist network, with Israeli PM Netanyahu warning accomplices would pay a heavy price.
