A University of Sydney study found rates of sexual assault against Australian children rose sharply between 2014 and 2024, defying researchers' expectations of a decline.
Attacks on boys aged 10 to 17 accelerated by 15.7% after 2021, with the study pointing to income inequality, the end of JobKeeper, and misogynistic online communities as likely contributors.
Researchers say the findings show an urgent need for prevention, and that growing awareness of abuse may also be partly driving the higher reported rates.
The study links the post-2021 spike to the end of JobKeeper in March 2021 and rising income inequality, now at its highest in 20 years, alongside the growth of misogynistic online communities.
