Targeted radioactive therapy may help delay spread of recurrent prostate cancer
A UCLA study found combining a targeted radioactive drug with radiation therapy may help keep recurrent prostate cancer under control for longer than radiation alone.
Adding the targeted radioactive drug 177Lu-PNT2002 to stereotactic body radiation therapy, or SBRT, may help keep recurrent prostate cancer under control longer than SBRT alone, according to new research led by investigators at the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.
UCLA researchers found that adding the radioactive drug 177Lu-PNT2002 to standard radiation therapy may better control recurrent prostate cancer.
The phase 2 LUNAR trial followed 92 men for nearly three years and found the combination may reduce the risk of widespread disease and hormone-resistant cancer, the study found.
The treatment may help men delay hormone therapy, which can cause significant side effects and affect quality of life over the long term, researchers say.
The LUNAR trial followed men for nearly three years, so if you have a loved one with recurrent prostate cancer, it may be worth asking their specialist about this combination approach.
