Extended Letrozole Sustains DFS Benefit at 15 Years in HR+ Breast Cancer
A major 15-year trial found that postmenopausal women with HR-positive breast cancer who took letrozole for an extra five years had better survival odds.
Final NSABP B-42 data show 5 additional years of letrozole improved DFS, BCFI, and distant recurrence vs placebo at 15 years, with no OS difference.
The final 15-year results of the NSABP B-42 trial found that extending letrozole therapy by five years significantly improved disease-free survival in postmenopausal breast cancer patients.
The 15-year disease-free survival rate was 61.6 per cent with extended letrozole versus 56.5 per cent with placebo, an absolute improvement of 5.1 per cent.
The benefit was most pronounced in women with node-positive disease, though the trial found no significant improvement in overall survival, the researchers noted.
Women with HR-positive breast cancer who have finished standard endocrine therapy, especially those with node-positive disease, may want to ask their oncologist about extended letrozole.
