Climate Change Is Fueling an Entirely New Type of Landslide
Scientists have identified a new type of landslide in northern Canada caused by climate change and wildfires melting permafrost from the bottom up, sending house-sized frozen slabs careening downhill.
House-sized slabs of permafrost are careening down hillsides in Northern Canada.
Researchers have classified a new category of landslide called permafrost detachment slides, triggered by two massive events in Canada's Northwest Territories in 2017 and 2018.
The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, found that wildfires and rising temperatures melt permafrost from the bottom up, causing entire frozen layers to slide downhill in huge cohesive blocks.
Researchers warn these events could become more frequent as global temperatures rise and wildfires increase in intensity and frequency.
