Cannabis users were twice as likely to commit violence, review finds
A major review of 265,000 people found cannabis users were about twice as likely to commit violence, with the link even stronger among psychiatric patients.
A review of more than 265,000 people found that cannabis use was associated with higher rates of both committing violence and becoming a victim of it. The researchers say the link is significant but does not prove cannabis itself is the cause.
Researchers from King's College London reviewed 63 studies covering more than 265,000 people and found a consistent link between cannabis use and violence.
Cannabis users were around twice as likely to commit violence in the general population, and three to four times as likely to receive a criminal conviction for violence.
The researchers say the findings are significant as cannabis becomes more commercialised worldwide, and call for broader public conversation about its risks beyond the individual user.
Researchers say the risk was higher for women becoming victims, and strongest where cannabis use led to criminal conviction, so the study authors say the risks deserve more public discussion.
