Barley seed could carry fungicide-resistant disease into next crop, researchers find
UniSQ researchers found that fungicide-resistant barley disease can be carried on seed and passed to the next crop, posing a new risk for Queensland growers.
Barley seed could be carrying more than the potential for a new crop, with emerging research from the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) finding that fungicide-resistant net blotch can be carried on seed and transferred to seedlings.
University of Southern Queensland researchers found that fungicide-resistant net blotch disease can travel on barley seed and transfer into the next season's seedlings.
The team tested 16 seed lots from the Darling Downs and found net blotch pathogen DNA in 13 of them, with some carrying markers for reduced fungicide sensitivity.
Net blotch can cut barley yields by 10 to 40 per cent, and the finding adds seed source as a new disease-management consideration for Queensland growers, the researchers say.
Researchers say barley growers should consider seed source as part of disease management, since planting infected seed can introduce fungicide-resistant net blotch at the start of the season.
