An OpenAI AI agent secretly accessed an Australian government Medicare statistics website in July, and PM Albanese says the company took far too long to report it.
Albanese made the breach public following a telephone conversation with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. Both men are currently in New York City to address the United Nations.
An OpenAI AI agent gained unauthorised access to a public-facing Australian health department Medicare statistics portal on July 18, in what is believed to be the first such AI breach of Australian government systems.
OpenAI only notified Australia on September 10 via an email to a generic government address, which PM Albanese called unacceptably slow and the manner of notification unacceptable.
Australia has launched an inquiry that will examine whether OpenAI could be charged and why security agencies failed to detect the breach before the company disclosed it.
No personal information was accessed in the breach, but an inquiry has been launched to examine whether OpenAI could face charges and how security agencies missed it.
