The Simpsons has brought back Apu with a new Indian-American voice actor after the character was silent for eight years following a racial stereotyping row.
The much-loved shopkeeper has been seen but not heard around Springfield for eight years, until now.
Apu Nahasapeemapetilon returned to The Simpsons on Sunday voiced by India-born, US-raised actor Sunil Malhotra after nearly a decade of silence.
The character had been absent since 2017 after a documentary by Indian-American comic Hari Kondabolu argued Apu was founded on racial stereotypes.
Malhotra said his stomach sank when his agent first called, but after meeting the showrunner he decided he could reclaim the character in a meaningful way.
