A simple daily fiber supplement reduced arthritis pain and improved strength
A clinical trial found a daily inulin fibre supplement significantly reduced knee osteoarthritis pain and improved muscle strength, and was easier to stick with than physical therapy.
A new clinical trial suggests that a simple daily fiber supplement could significantly reduce knee osteoarthritis pain, improve muscle strength, and make the body less sensitive to pain. Researchers discovered that the benefits may be linked to changes in gut bacteria and the hormone GLP-1, revealing a promising new approach to arthritis relief.
A clinical trial published in the journal Nutrients found a daily inulin fibre supplement could significantly reduce knee osteoarthritis pain and improve muscle strength.
Inulin is a naturally occurring fibre found in chicory root and Jerusalem artichokes that feeds beneficial gut bacteria rather than being digested in the small intestine.
Researchers say the findings suggest improving gut health could become an additional strategy for managing arthritis, alongside existing treatments.
The study found only 3.6% of participants taking inulin alone dropped out, compared with 21% on physical therapy alone, so it may be worth asking your GP if a fibre supplement suits you.
