A large French study found eight common food preservatives are linked to meaningfully higher rates of high blood pressure and heart disease.
Common preservatives hiding in processed foods may carry unexpected heart risks, with heavy consumption linked to substantially higher rates of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Researchers identified eight widely used preservatives associated with hypertension, although the observational study cannot prove they were directly responsible.
French researchers tracked more than 112,000 people for up to eight years and found heavy consumption of certain preservatives was linked to higher cardiovascular risk.
Those eating the most non-antioxidant preservatives had a 29% higher risk of hypertension compared with those eating the least, the study found.
The researchers say this is the first study of its kind across a wide range of preservatives, and the findings add weight to reducing heavily processed food in your diet.
