Former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet has pulled out of the race to become the next UN secretary general after losing support on the security council.

Michelle Bachelet withdrew her candidacy for UN secretary general after a straw poll showed her support had collapsed.
Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan now leads the race, with seven candidates remaining to succeed António Guterres by 31 December.
The security council will formally recommend one candidate to the 193-member general assembly, whose approval is considered a formality once consensus is reached.
