Gardening advice confirms that potted fruit trees can still be planted in spring, giving those who missed the winter bare-root season a second chance.
Some trees need a second compatible tree nearby for cross-pollination to produce fruit, but multi-graft trees solve this by joining two or three varieties on one rootstock.
Pots need to be at least 40cm wide, filled with quality potting mix rather than soil, and roots should be trimmed and repotted every winter or second year.
If you only have space for one tree, ask your nursery whether it is self-fertile or needs a companion, or look for a multi-graft tree that has two or three varieties on one rootstock.
