Dallas-based Colossal Biosciences announced it has used an AI platform to identify the genetic changes behind the dodo's distinctive features as part of its de-extinction project.
The company has completed 95 per cent of the dodo genome and plans to edit the genes of the Nicobar pigeon, the dodo's closest living relative, to introduce dodo traits.
No hatching date has been announced, but Colossal CEO Ben Lamm says the goal is eventually to return dodos to their native island of Mauritius.
