A Rock Dragged 90 Km Into Earth Came Back With a Temperature Story That Breaks The Models
A rock from Papua New Guinea that was dragged 90km underground millions of years ago is challenging what scientists thought they knew about subduction zones.
Scientists have discovered a mysterious rock in eastern Papua New Guinea that traveled to the underworld roughly 4.4 million years ago.
Scientists studying a rock from Goodenough Island in Papua New Guinea found it recorded two very different temperature conditions as it was pushed deep into the Earth.
At 45 kilometres deep the rock was surprisingly hot at around 700 degrees Celsius, but as it went deeper past 90 kilometres the temperature barely rose, which breaks existing models.
Geologist Axel Schmitt from Curtin University says the find reveals that temperature gradients inside subduction zones are far more complex than scientists previously assumed.
