Large swarms of endangered bogong moths have been spotted across coastal NSW, with hundreds of sightings logged over a single weekend on the Bogong Watch citizen science page.
Researchers say September alone has produced more bogong moth sightings than all of last year, with one volunteer spotting more than 200 moths in a single night.
Scientists say the surge is a hopeful sign of species recovery, as bogong moths are a critical food source for the critically endangered mountain pygmy possum.
