Scientists build computer model that simulates first 2 billion years of universe
MIT and Harvard researchers have built a computer simulation called Lumina that recreates the first 2 billion years of the universe in unprecedented detail.
MIT’s Lumina simulation offers an unprecedented look at how the first galaxies and stars emerged and helped end the universe’s dark ages.
Scientists at MIT and Harvard built Lumina, a computer simulation showing how the first stars and galaxies formed in the early universe.
Lumina is 100 times bigger and 30 times sharper than previous models, and was powered by a supercomputer using over 100,000 processors and 15,000 graphics chips.
Researchers worldwide can now compare Lumina's predictions with real images from space telescopes to help solve mysteries about how the universe began.
