Quantum sensor loop design could improve magnetic measurements for medicine and communications
Adelaide University researchers have found a simpler way to make ultra-sensitive magnetic sensors more accurate, which could improve brain imaging and medical diagnostics.
Adelaide University quantum engineers have found a new way to improve some of the world's most sensitive sensors of electromagnetic fields, a breakthrough that could help advance brain imaging, medical diagnostics, communications technology and next-generation quantum devices.
Adelaide University quantum engineers have solved a long-standing problem with superconducting quantum interference devices, known as SQUIDs, used in brain imaging and medical diagnostics.
The team found that adding bare loops containing no Josephson junctions creates a synthetic area spread, making the sensor behave as if it has many differently sized loops without the design compromise.
The researchers say the discovery could unlock the full potential of quantum sensing technologies across medicine, communications and next-generation quantum devices.
The researchers say the breakthrough could help advance brain imaging and medical diagnostics, though practical applications are still in development.
