A Nanotyrannus skeleton nicknamed Jodi sold at Sotheby's in New York for $47.3 million, making it the second most expensive dinosaur fossil ever sold.
The auction house had expected it to fetch between $6 and $9 million, but six bidders online and by phone pushed the price far beyond that in about 12 minutes.
The mystery buyer remains anonymous, and some scientists have raised concerns about significant fossils like Jodi ending up in private hands.
