Israel election live: polls open in most consequential vote in country’s history
Israelis are voting in what is being called the most consequential election in the country's history, with polls suggesting Netanyahu's coalition is likely to lose its majority.
Most polling shows prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition will lose its majority, with Gadi Eisenkot the leading opposition contender
Polls have opened in Israel's first election since the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 and the subsequent wars in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
Most polling shows Netanyahu's coalition will lose its majority in the 120-seat Knesset, but the opposition is also expected to fall short of the 61 seats needed to govern.
The vote is widely seen as a referendum on Netanyahu's leadership, with the 76-year-old also facing ongoing corruption trials in three separate cases.
