Exclusive: Guardian Australia investigation reveals state governments use shared graves to bury those deemed too poor to pay for funerals. ‘It’s unspeakable,’ one relative says
A Guardian Australia investigation found the NSW government is burying people deemed too poor to afford funerals in unmarked communal graves at Rookwood cemetery in Sydney.
More than 100 unmarked graves have been identified across NSW, some holding four to six strangers including Vietnam veterans, cancer sufferers and people experiencing homelessness.
In at least six cases families were not told, which the Guardian says likely breaches NSW policy designed to avoid causing unnecessary distress to those who may have wished to make other arrangements.
Homelessness sector leaders say they were never told about the practice and want the chance to fund proper burials for clients, so advocates can now push to be contacted before this happens.
