Tired, gaining weight, always cold? It could be the thyroid
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is commonly mistaken for menopause or burnout, but a simple blood test can diagnose it and thyroid pills can fix it.
A US endocrinologist explains that Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune thyroid condition, is frequently missed because its symptoms mimic menopause and chronic fatigue.
The condition overwhelmingly affects women and is most often diagnosed between ages 30 and 60, with peak prevalence between 30 and 50, the doctor says.
Two blood tests can confirm the diagnosis and daily thyroid replacement pills are usually all that is needed to restore energy and manage weight.
Doctors say diagnosis involves two blood tests, TSH and serum-free T4, so ask your GP for both if you have ongoing fatigue, weight gain or cold intolerance.
