Testicular tissue transplant offers fertility hope
Doctors in Edinburgh have performed the UK's first testicular tissue transplant on a 19-year-old, offering hope that boys who lose fertility through cancer treatment may one day have children.
New procedure seen as important step forward for young people whose future fertility may be affected by treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses
NHS Lothian doctors transplanted previously frozen testicular tissue back into a 19-year-old man whose fertility was destroyed by chemotherapy, in the UK's first procedure of its kind.
The tissue, which contains spermatogonial stem cells responsible for sperm production, was removed and frozen in 2023 before the patient underwent a bone marrow transplant for a serious blood disorder.
Study lead Professor Rod Mitchell said the procedure is a big step toward helping boys facing sterilising treatments have children, with results to be assessed after eight months of monitoring.
The procedure is currently a trial, with results expected after eight months when some transplanted tissue will be examined to see whether sperm production has resumed.
