Fighter jets deployed and airport shut in ‘aviation emergency’ over German city of Nuremberg
Fighter jets were scrambled and Nuremberg airport shut down after a flight from Corfu triggered an aviation emergency, but the plane landed safely.
Eurofighter jets were deployed to escort the aircraft which was reportedly travelling from Corfu in Greece to Germany
Nuremberg airport suspended all flights and deployed Eurofighter jets to escort an incoming aircraft from Corfu amid an aviation emergency on Tuesday.
An emergency code was issued beforehand, and suspected drone sightings had already disrupted air traffic at the airport overnight between 2am and 4am.
The incident follows a drone carrying explosives found at Leipzig Airport two months ago, which Germany blamed on Russia, raising fresh hybrid-attack concerns.
The airport has since reopened and the aircraft landed safely, but investigations into the cause are ongoing so check flight status if travelling through Nuremberg.
