Scientists Identified a Biological Signature of Tinnitus, And It's in Your Blood
Scientists found a blood protein called prestin that is about 50% higher in people with tinnitus, which could lead to the first objective test for the condition.
For the millions worldwide with tinnitus, silence never comes.
Researchers have identified a blood protein called prestin that appears strongly linked to tinnitus, offering the first potential objective biomarker for the condition.
In a study of 82 adults, those with tinnitus had prestin concentrations in their blood roughly 50 percent higher than those without the condition.
The study found an association, not a proven cause, but it raises hope that a simple blood test for tinnitus could one day replace relying solely on a patient's own description.
There is no diagnostic test yet, but ask your GP about tinnitus if you have persistent ringing, as this research may eventually lead to a blood test.
