South Africa's ANC suffered its worst-ever local election result, winning only 30.76% of the vote, a dramatic fall from 46% at the last local elections in 2021.
The party won a majority in just one of nine provinces and the most votes in only two of eight cities, compared with six cities at the last elections.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula called the outcome catastrophic, blaming high cost of living and the middle class turning away from the party in large numbers.
