Scientists Found One of The 'Chunkiest' Squid-Like Creatures Ever Known
Paleontologists in Wyoming have discovered a new Jurassic squid-like creature that is one of the chunkiest of its kind ever found, about 160 million years old.
Paleontologists have identified an entirely new Jurassic squid-like creature from a pair of fossils retrieved from the bed of an ancient inland sea in Wyoming.
Scientists have identified a brand-new species of prehistoric squid-like creature from two fossils found in an ancient inland sea bed in Wyoming.
Named Wyoteuthis linsterorum, the creature lived around 160 million years ago and had a rostrum nearly 60 mm wide, making it one of the chunkiest belemnites ever recorded.
Despite its chunky build, the creature was relatively short at around 55 to 60 cm long, and its discovery adds a unique outlier to the well-studied belemnite fossil record.
The fossil was named Wyoteuthis linsterorum after collector Cliff Linster, who discovered one specimen but passed away earlier this year, a lovely nod to citizen science.
