Clues to higher incidence of dementia in women may lie in menopause
New Canadian research suggests menopause-related brain changes may help explain why women are diagnosed with dementia far more often than men.
Women are disproportionately prone to Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers are studying the connection with midlife changes
Canadian scientists have published new research linking menopause-related biological changes in the brain to a higher risk of cognitive decline later in life.
Women made up an estimated 62 per cent of people living with dementia in Canada in 2020, and researchers say longer lifespan alone does not explain the gap.
Researchers hope the findings will eventually point to behaviours or interventions that can support women during and after menopause to reduce dementia risk.
Researchers say menopause puts some women on a different brain-health trajectory, so talking to your GP about vascular health and memory in midlife may be worth doing now.
