Sarah Hanson-Young is the first to publicly declare, with senators Mehreen Faruqi, David Shoebridge and Nick McKim also considered frontrunners.
The party room is expected to meet Wednesday or Thursday at a Sydney retreat to choose their third leader in less than two years.
