Privacy watchdog launches probe into China-based company behind Kmart ‘pervert glasses’ app
Australia's privacy watchdog has launched a formal investigation into the Chinese company behind the app in Kmart's cheap smartglasses after the firm failed to respond to inquiries.
Commissioner said Shenzhen Qingcheng, the app maker behind the HeyCyan app in the smartglasses, failed to respond to her inquiries
The Australian privacy commissioner has opened a formal investigation into Shenzhen Qingcheng, the Chinese company behind the HeyCyan app used in Kmart's $89 Anko smartglasses.
The investigation was triggered after Shenzhen Qingcheng failed to respond to the commissioner's inquiries, and by concerns from third-party analysis of the technology and its privacy policy.
Current privacy law only covers companies, not individuals who use the glasses, meaning people filmed without consent have limited legal recourse under existing rules.
If you bought Kmart's Anko smartglasses, the privacy commissioner's investigation focuses on the HeyCyan app maker, Shenzhen Qingcheng, which collects data through the device.
